"Baba" is the Serbian word for Grandmother and is used with much love. There are many versions of the word in different parts of Eastern Europe, but they illustrate the same feeling. The icy blue and white in this painting and the look of determination on the woman's face is emblematic of the inner strength necessary to live in the colder areas of world. Raymond Bartlett has an uncanny ability to capture so much in such a spare way.
